University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize winner, has claimed an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honor the most peculiar and innovative research in academia. Thurairajah and his team secured this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing.
When Thurairajah’s supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the news of their win, Thurairajah was elated. Celebrating with wine in espresso cups, they had successfully designed and tested various urinal prototypes like the Nautilus and Cornocopia to achieve a splash-free solution. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus as the superior design due to its reduced splash and easier maintenance compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich donning yellow raincoats, Thurairajah emphasized that no actual urine splashing occurred during their experiments. Instead, they utilized an anatomically precise simulation to conduct their tests. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized its practical application in enhancing public restroom experiences.
Apart from Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were recognized at the event. University of Toronto scholars were honored with the Economics Prize for their study on the unethical behavior of affluent individuals, while McGill University experts contributed to the Technology Prize for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing. The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, have moved to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. to ensure global participation within the scientific community.
Thurairajah, alongside collaborators from various countries, supported the decision to shift the awards ceremony to Europe, emphasizing the international nature of scientific collaboration. He expressed the importance of inclusivity and global cooperation within the scientific community, demonstrating solidarity with researchers worldwide.
