A new crackdown in London will enforce regulations preventing certain pedicab services from overcharging customers and playing loud music. Transport for London has introduced new rules requiring pedicab riders to obtain a license, meet English language standards, pass a safety exam, and possess a driving theory test certificate. Pedicabs, known for touring tourist hotspots and adorned with vibrant lights, have faced criticism for excessive pricing and disruptive behavior.
To address these issues, Transport for London has proposed a fare cap for all rickshaw rides. The new pricing structure includes a maximum base fare of £5, with additional charges of £1 per minute for the first passenger and £3 per minute for each extra passenger. Furthermore, pedicab operators will need a vehicle and personal license, each costing £100 and £114 respectively, valid for one year. These new licensing regulations and fare limits are set to take effect on October 30 this year.
In response to concerns about traffic congestion and safety, pedicabs will now be required to comply with road regulations, display a number plate, and undergo regular safety inspections. Operators must have a London-based establishment, conduct fire risk assessments, and perform basic staff background checks. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, expressed satisfaction with the new regulations, emphasizing the importance of ensuring pedicabs meet operational standards to provide a safe and professional experience for both customers and drivers.
