“12-Year-Old Boy in Coma After Sydney Shark Attack”

International"12-Year-Old Boy in Coma After Sydney Shark Attack"

Loved ones of a 12-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour provided an emotional update on his condition following the traumatic incident.

The boy, identified as Nico Antic by Australian media, was at Shark Beach in Sydney Harbour with friends when the shark attack occurred while they were jumping off rocks. This incident marked the beginning of a series of shark attacks that occurred after Nico was hospitalized.

Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene on Sunday and commended Nico’s friends for their courage in entering the water to rescue him. Nico was promptly taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition with severe injuries to both legs, leading to emergency surgery that same night.

Sadly, Nico’s family revealed that he has been in a coma since the tragic attack. His sister, Sophie, expressed their devastation, mentioning that Nico’s brain showed no signs of activity. She described Nico as a cheerful and athletic individual who is cherished by many.

Following the distressing turn of events, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by a family friend, Victor Piñeiro, to assist the Antic family during this challenging period. The fundraiser aims to cover upcoming expenses and arrangements necessary for Nico’s care.

Over 1,700 individuals have contributed to the fundraising effort, raising more than AUD$122,000 (£61,000) by 2.30 pm local time. Nico became the initial victim in a series of shark attacks across New South Wales, prompting the closure of swimming areas on the state’s northern beaches for 48 hours.

Shark experts attribute the surge in shark activity to favorable conditions in NSW, including warm ocean temperatures and polluted water from recent storms. Authorities caution against swimming or surfing near river mouths due to potential shark congregation and advise opting for safer alternatives like local pools.

To support the Antic family, donations can be made through the GoFundMe campaign established for Nico’s recovery.
