A recent report by consumer advocate Which? has revealed that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations in terms of service reliability. According to the study, smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the larger brands by offering faster speeds, more consistent connections, and better value for money.
The research indicates that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages are also common sources of frustration for users.
A significant 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing problems with their internet service in the past year, indicating that only a small minority have enjoyed a trouble-free connection.
Sky emerged as one of the worst performers in terms of frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue. Similarly, Virgin Media received criticism for regular connection dropouts despite having some of the highest broadband bills in the market, with around a quarter of users also complaining about slow download speeds.
Among dissatisfied users were subscribers of TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which also received low ratings from customers.
On the other hand, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic have been praised for their superior performance and fewer reliability issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
These findings align with previous research by Which?, consistently showing that smaller broadband firms excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to larger providers in the UK.
Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help consumers identify available broadband networks in their area.
In response to the report, a spokesperson for Virgin Media highlighted the company’s ongoing investments to provide excellent services, citing official data from Ofcom and independent rankings that showcase Virgin Media’s high performance across various broadband categories.
It is essential for consumers to have access to high-quality broadband services, and with competitive deals available, customers are encouraged to switch to providers that offer better service.
