Law enforcement officials have reported that a suspect is in police custody following a tragic mass shooting in Mississippi, where six individuals, including a child, lost their lives.
A 24-year-old man has been formally accused of murder after a series of shootings in the northeastern part of the state. The suspect, identified as Daricka M. Moore, is facing a first-degree murder charge that may potentially be elevated to capital murder, according to statements made by the county sheriff.
The gunman carried out the attacks at three different locations in West Point, a city situated in Clay County, Mississippi, on Friday. Local authorities have confirmed the apprehension of an individual linked to the horrific incidents.
Sheriff Eddie Scott of Clay County expressed in a social media post that several innocent lives were senselessly taken as a result of violence in the town of West Point, near the border with Alabama. The sheriff, speaking to WTVA, disclosed that six casualties occurred across three sites.
All the victims were reportedly family members of the suspect. Sheriff Scott, during a press briefing on Saturday, remarked, “I don’t understand the motive behind targeting a 7-year-old for such a heinous act.”
The tragic incidents unfolded in the rural community of Cedarbluff, located west of the county seat of West Point, as per details provided by the news agency AP.
The sheriff assured the public that a suspect was in custody and that there was no ongoing threat to the community, as stated in his Facebook post.
