A donor from the Labour party has taken preemptive action against potential government restrictions on children’s social media access.
Dale Vince, a vocal critic, has criticized tech giants like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he perceives as unchecked influence on children. Responding to parents’ top demand, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a mobile plan that permits unlimited calls and texts but excludes internet access.
The millionaire businessman argues that traditional mobile plans are necessary due to the harmful content children encounter online, calling on government officials to intervene. This move comes as pressure mounts on the government to prohibit social media access for those under 16.
Recently, over 60 Labour Members of Parliament urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead in implementing a ban on underage social media usage. Mr. Vince, known for his various businesses including Ecotalk, has rolled out a new SIM-only plan called Just Talk, offering unlimited calls and texts starting at £4 monthly without internet connectivity.
In light of concerns about the influence of tech giants on young individuals, Mr. Vince emphasized the importance of providing a communication tool that keeps children connected without exposing them to online risks. His initiative aims to address the issues posed by irresponsible tech platforms and protect young users from potential harm.
Ecotalk, established by Mr. Vince in 2018, is collaborating with environmentalist Chris Packham to support land restoration and rewilding efforts in Sussex and Devon. The company’s Just Talk tariff is designed to provide a safer communication option for children, independent of internet access, in response to growing concerns about online content exposure and its impact on youth.
