A substantial funding package is being introduced to safeguard museums, libraries, and heritage buildings, aimed at enhancing the arts and culture sector.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is preparing to announce financial support for over 1,000 arts and cultural organizations throughout England. This allocation includes £114 million specifically designated for regional museums outside of London that are grappling with deteriorating infrastructure and financial constraints.
The initiative is anticipated to benefit more than 150 locations, representing a significant uplift following a period of neglect under the previous administration. Government sources emphasize that this action signifies a departure from the failed “levelling up” strategy of the Conservatives, which resulted in numerous cultural institutions facing financial instability.
Officials assert that during a time when divisive forces are at play, nurturing the arts, culture, and heritage is vital for uniting the nation and preserving its collective narrative. Ms. Nandy remarked, “Amid attempts to sow division, culture serves as a unifying force, weaving our shared national tale.”
She added, “The previous administration exploited museums and heritage sites to fuel cultural conflicts, while simultaneously depriving them of essential funding, leading to their decline. As communal spaces, it is unsurprising that those advocating for a narrow vision of the country’s future seek to undermine our esteemed cultural and heritage establishments.”

Between 2010 and 2023, the UK witnessed a decline of over 17% in the number of libraries, resulting in approximately 764 closures. The funding forms part of the government’s efforts to address the cost of living crisis and establish inclusive spaces for communities to gather.
Emphasizing local culture within the funding allocation, the support aims to promote arts and culture in all communities, ensuring accessibility beyond London and affluent regions.
