President Donald Trump remains steadfast in his unconventional push for the United States to acquire Greenland, following discord in discussions with Denmark. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in talks with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt concerning Greenland, a semi-independent region of Denmark and a NATO partner. Prior to the negotiations, Trump reiterated on social media his belief that the U.S. must secure Greenland for national security reasons, urging NATO assistance in seizing control of the territory. Post-meeting, Rasmussen described the discussions as candid and constructive.
A specialized task force will be established to explore alternative solutions to satisfy Trump’s interests in Greenland without outright annexation. Reports indicate that the Trump administration is willing to offer a substantial financial incentive to the people of Greenland in exchange for their support in transferring ownership.
Rasmussen emphasized the importance of mutual exploration of feasible compromises while upholding the sovereignty of the Danish kingdom and the self-governance of the Greenlandic population. Despite differing public stances, Denmark and Greenland intend to continue dialogue with the U.S., recognizing a fundamental divergence on the future of the Arctic island.
A high-level working group will convene to seek common ground, focusing on addressing U.S. security concerns while respecting Denmark’s boundaries. Rasmussen announced the inaugural meeting of this group is slated to take place within weeks.
