Storm Goretti Batters UK: Power Outages & Travel Disruptions

UpdatesStorm Goretti Batters UK: Power Outages & Travel Disruptions

A powerful storm named Goretti has struck the UK, causing widespread power outages for tens of thousands of residents. Additional disruptions are expected as extreme weather conditions persist. The Met Office issued a rare red warning for dangerous winds in one region, leading to significant travel disruptions affecting cars, trains, and planes due to heavy snowfall and strong winds. Across the country, amber warnings for snow have been issued in many areas, with yellow warnings in place for snow, rain, wind, and ice.

School closures are anticipated due to the severe weather conditions, with up to 30cm of snow expected in some regions. The West Midlands and Eastern Wales are among the hardest-hit areas, with an amber weather warning specifically for snow. Residents in cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and Worcester are advised to brace for travel disruptions and hazardous conditions.

In the South West, more than 43,000 properties faced power cuts due to the storm. The Midlands is under both amber and yellow snow warnings, affecting major cities like Birmingham, Derby, and Wolverhampton. Travelers are advised to expect significant disruptions on roads, railways, and at airports. East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport experienced closures but have since reopened, although delays are expected. Rail services in Birmingham are also affected, with some lines possibly remaining closed until Saturday.

The North is also experiencing weather challenges, with yellow warnings for snow impacting regions like West Yorkshire and County Durham. Residents are urged to exercise caution due to possible icy conditions on roads and pavements. Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in effect for various parts of the country, including Edinburgh and Aberdeen, until midday.

Low temperatures are forecasted to continue, potentially leading to prolonged snow cover. Wales is facing travel chaos with amber snow and yellow rain warnings in place. Transport for Wales has suspended services on several routes due to the adverse weather conditions. The rain alert may cause localized flooding, requiring cleanup efforts into the weekend.
