Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service allowing customers to trade in their mobile phones. Partnering with gadget resell company musicMagpie and its parent company AO, Timpson now offers a quick cash exchange for unwanted handsets at its stores.
Research indicates that 73% of adults in the UK own at least one unused smartphone with an average trade-in value of approximately £250, totaling an estimated £10 billion in unused smartphones. While numerous online resell options exist, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer in-person transactions, despite other similar high street alternatives already being available.
A survey revealed that 68% of people prefer trading in their devices face-to-face, with one in four emphasizing the importance of immediate payment. Timpson and musicMagpie initiated a trial run of the trade-in service four months ago and have now expanded it to over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide.
John Roberts, CEO and founder of AO World, expressed that the convenience of trading in old tech at Timpson locations makes it an attractive choice for customers, enabling them to receive cash within minutes. The collaboration between musicMagpie’s refurbishment expertise and Timpson’s extensive network aims to provide customers with instant value for their old tech while promoting affordability.
Steve Oliver, managing director of musicMagpie, highlighted the significance of integrating Magpie services into 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK, expanding accessibility and convenience for customers. Sid Hubbard, group director of Timpson, emphasized the trust and friendly service their colleagues provide, enhancing the overall high street experience for customers, aligning with Timpson’s longstanding commitment to repairing and extending the life of goods.
