A man was fatally shot by police after he pointed a bow and arrow at them. The incident occurred on Quia Road in Gunnedah, located approximately 450km northwest of Sydney, when officers responded to a welfare check call around 1:40 pm on Friday, January 16.
According to a press release from New South Wales Police, the man confronted the officers outside a residence before retreating inside and returning with the weapon, aiming it at the officers. In response, the police sought cover in their vehicle, and a firearm was discharged during the confrontation, resulting in the man’s death despite attempts by emergency medical services to save him.
A spokesperson for NSW police stated that a critical incident investigation has been initiated into the shooting incident. A team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the inquiry, which will be scrutinized by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
