The head of the sole anti-war party in Russia affirmed his commitment to stay in the country and advocate for change, despite facing escalated pressure from authorities leading to the party’s exclusion from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent decision to disqualify the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko from the September vote, which translates to “apple” in Russian, was perceived by leader Nikolai Rybakov as a response to the resonance of their plea to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine among voters.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of public support over the court ruling, citing the visible backing from hundreds of protesters outside the court who vocalized their discontent. Once a prominent voice in parliament and a government critic, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, which is predominantly controlled by the Putin-endorsed United Russia party.
Although United Russia is expected to maintain its dominance in the upcoming election, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would present a stronger challenge if permitted to participate. Yabloko is currently challenging the Supreme Court’s decision, which was prompted by allegations of undisclosed campaign backing from Western entities, among other accusations that the party denies.
Rybakov reiterated his determination to remain in Russia despite strict censorship laws and other legislative measures that have compelled many opposition figures to flee or risk prosecution for expressing dissenting views. He stressed the necessity of effecting change within the country itself to alter the political landscape.
Amidst restricted freedom of expression, public sentiment regarding the war remains challenging to gauge, but data from the Levada Center indicates a decline in support for the Russian armed forces’ actions in Ukraine. Rybakov highlighted the growing support for Yabloko’s advocacy for peace and a democratic Russia, underscoring the widespread desire within Russian society to end the conflict.
