Marcus Ericsson clinched victory at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham with two decisive passes. The first pass occurred when Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact while Ericsson was executing a late-race maneuver. The second pass, with only four laps remaining on the Markham street course, saw Ericsson overtake Romain Grosjean to secure his fifth IndyCar career win.
Ericsson attributed the win to the team’s exceptional pace and strategic gameplay, highlighting their ability to perform when it mattered most. Grosjean finished in second place, achieving his first top-five finish of the season, while Power claimed the third spot. Alex Palou, the leader in the driver rankings, crossed the finish line in fourth place.
The Andretti Global team, comprising Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who is ranked second in the standings, strategically targeted Palou after Kirkwood crashed out of the race in the 53rd lap. Team principal Ron Ruzewski emphasized the importance of gaining points to keep Kirkwood in contention for the championship.
Despite facing challenges, including a miscommunication that led to a brief collision between Power and Ericsson, the team rallied to secure valuable points. Palou earned 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points in the standings.
Ericsson’s focus then shifted to Grosjean, who struggled with fuel and tire wear towards the end of the race. Despite the obstacles, Ericsson executed a crucial pass on Grosjean, highlighting the tight and challenging nature of the circuit.
The race saw several incidents, with multiple cautions and a significant number of cars failing to finish. Markham hosted its first-ever IndyCar race, following a move from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, with drivers and fans alike praising the circuit’s layout and the overall event atmosphere.
Looking ahead, Ericsson expressed optimism for future races at the venue, expecting smoother operations in the coming years. The event marked a successful debut for Markham as an IndyCar host city, setting the stage for more exciting races in the seasons to come.
