As summer approaches, many British vacationers are already envisioning their holiday escape, with Spain’s Balearic Islands, including Majorca and Palma, often topping their destination wish list.
However, this year’s holiday plans may face an unexpected hurdle due to a concerning report revealing high levels of pollution affecting some of the region’s most popular beaches.
The Balearic Sea Report 2026 highlighted significant “faecal contamination,” marking a worrying decline in water quality across the area, as discussed for the first time in the report.
According to Informa Mar Balear, the standards of bathing water have drastically fallen since 2010, especially on urban beaches, raising concerns about public health and safety.
Moreover, there has been a doubling of incidents related to microbiological contamination in the past year, with cases increasing from 46 to 92, leading to 20 swimming bans and 72 swim advisories, as reported by the Express.
Cities like Ciutadella, Santanyí, Calvià, and Sóller are grappling with significant faecal contamination issues, while Formentera and Menorca stand out for having the cleanest bathing waters in the region.
The report concluded by recommending continuous monitoring and improved communication with beach visitors to ensure their safety and well-being.
In addition to the pollution concerns, another pressing issue for vacationers is the declaration by a prominent hotelier in Majorca that the island has reached its maximum capacity.
Joan Trian Riu, the managing director of Riu Hotels and Resorts, cautioned about the escalating demand for accommodations leading to price hikes, foreseeing a challenging situation for locals in the future.
Addressing the issue in the Majorca Daily Bulletin, he emphasized the need for proactive decisions to address the challenges posed by tourism growth on the island, highlighting the urgency for sustainable solutions.
