“Ottawa Residents Grapple with Flood Anxiety”

Updates"Ottawa Residents Grapple with Flood Anxiety"

Aroha DeForest has been a resident of Nepean since the 1990s and initially purchased sandbags following a flood on her property in 2023. In light of the unprecedented rainstorm on Canada Day, she now considers the sandbags a permanent addition to her laneway.

Describing the sentiment in the west end of Ottawa, DeForest mentioned a sense of anxiety whenever severe weather warnings are issued. The recent rainfall of 23.5 millimetres on Monday exacerbated concerns, leading to flooded homes for the second time in just over a month.

The repeated flooding incidents have left residents like DeForest feeling on edge, with a heightened fear of potential disasters. The need to constantly monitor the situation has even led to residents coordinating to ensure someone is always present to watch over the neighborhood.

Expressing the ongoing challenges faced by residents, Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine emphasized the necessity for additional support following the July 1 flooding. He highlighted the need for a thorough examination of the city’s response to such extreme weather events to enhance preparedness for the future.

Another Nepean resident, Wesley Bova, shared similar apprehensions, noting the lingering worry even after a less damaging storm compared to the Canada Day deluge. The anxiety persists among families who have endured the aftermath of previous floods, instilling a sense of unease whenever adverse weather conditions loom.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of recent flooding incidents, there remains a collective concern and a shared hope for improved resilience in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
