“Nurse Attacked by Mentally Ill Patient at Broadmoor”

Updates"Nurse Attacked by Mentally Ill Patient at Broadmoor"

A nurse shared her horrifying experience of being attacked by a mentally ill patient, leaving her with blood on her face. The incident occurred at Broadmoor hospital, where Linda McKinlay tried to prevent Jonty Bravery, who previously threw a young boy from the Tate Modern, from harming himself. During the struggle, Bravery scratched McKinlay’s face and eye, resulting in injuries. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail for this attack on McKinlay and her colleague Kate Mastalerz.

The trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court found Bravery guilty of assaulting the nurses, with body-worn footage capturing the violent encounter. McKinlay, a seasoned nurse, expressed shock at the attack, stating it was her first such experience at Broadmoor. Mastalerz also suffered injuries, describing the situation as extremely stressful.

The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the severity of the incident, condemning the aggression faced by healthcare workers. Despite Bravery’s absence at the trial, compelling evidence led to his conviction. Bravery received a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years for the previous incident of throwing a child from the Tate Modern balcony.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring, who presided over the case, highlighted Bravery’s repeated assaults on caregivers, indicating a pattern of targeting those who care for him. The 16-week sentence for the attack on the nurses will run concurrently with his 15-year minimum term. The judge acknowledged Bravery’s mental health challenges but underscored the likelihood of his release hinged on significant changes.

In a separate incident, Bravery faced a 14-week jail term in 2020 for assaulting other hospital staff at Broadmoor. His violent behavior included attacking a nursing assistant and biting a rehabilitation therapist assistant. Despite his refusal to participate in court proceedings, evidence detailed his aggressive actions towards the nurses.
