New Zealand has decided not to participate in Donald Trump’s Board of Peace in Gaza due to concerns about its current structure and objectives. The Foreign Minister stated that New Zealand acknowledges the leadership of the United States and regional countries in promoting peace in Gaza. He mentioned that there is a potential role for the Board of Peace in Gaza to fulfill its duties as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
Despite recognizing the importance of the Board’s work, the Foreign Minister explained that other regional states have already volunteered to support the board’s activities. New Zealand believes that its involvement at this stage would not significantly enhance the board’s effectiveness. Emphasizing New Zealand’s commitment to the United Nations, the Foreign Minister stressed the need for the Board’s actions to align with the UN Charter and requested clarity on its scope and future direction.
Although New Zealand will not be part of the Board in its current setup, the country intends to closely monitor the developments related to the initiative.
