“Nepal Military Rescues Hundreds in Flood After Landslide”

International"Nepal Military Rescues Hundreds in Flood After Landslide"

Nepal’s military rescue team reached an area affected by a sudden flood on Monday following a landslide that blocked the Budhi Gandaki river in north central Nepal. Helicopters and soldiers delivered essential supplies and began evacuating residents and tourists. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, with only five individuals missing. The government’s timely warning allowed many to seek safety on higher ground before the flood struck.

The flood, triggered by the initial river blockage near Chumchure village, caused significant damage, including the destruction of five bridges, three hydropower plant construction sites, and numerous homes and farms. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported the safe evacuation of 95 individuals, including nine foreigners, to nearby towns.

The affected region, known for its popular trekking routes, is frequented by hikers, especially during October, one of the busiest times for visitors. Relief efforts are underway, with trucks transporting supplies to accessible areas by road and army helicopters delivering aid to remote mountain villages.

The Budhi Gandaki River, a critical waterway near Kathmandu, merges into the Trishuli River. Videos circulating on social media depict houses and structures being swept away by the raging waters amidst towering mountains, although the full extent of impact on the mountainous villages remains unclear.

Nepal continues to recover from a devastating flood in August that ravaged the Nepal-China border, claiming over 1,400 lives and leaving thousands missing. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office announced the conclusion of search and rescue operations on October 5, shifting focus towards infrastructure restoration.
