National"Mother Left Baby in Hot Car at Work, Faces 5 Years in Prison"

A woman left her 10-month-old child in a hot car while she was at work in a fast-food establishment. Hannah Faith Cormier was taken into custody after informing authorities that she unintentionally left her baby in the vehicle during her shift. The infant had been left alone in the car for approximately one and a half hours.

The child was quickly taken to a hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, despite efforts by the medical staff, the baby girl passed away. Jefferson Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office in Louisiana revealed that Comier received a five-year prison sentence with hard labor, with no possibility of probation, parole, or sentence suspension, as the victim was under 10 years old.

Comier was arrested in August 2024 and charged with negligent homicide on October 2 of the same year. She pleaded no contest to the charges. Negligent homicide, according to Louisiana law, involves causing the death of a person due to criminal negligence. District Attorney Lauren Heinen expressed the community’s deep sorrow over the loss of the 10-month-old and emphasized the importance of protecting all children.

Tragically, 31 children in the US have died from being left in hot cars, with an average of 37 children under 15 years old succumbing to heatstroke annually. In 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children lost their lives in similar circumstances.
