Iran’s envoy to the UK has been called to the Foreign Office to address the violent crackdown on nationwide protests in Tehran. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed concern over reports indicating a high number of casualties due to the regime’s severe response, exacerbated by an internet blackout hindering accurate information dissemination.
Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump encouraged Iranian demonstrators to persist in their protests, emphasizing the need to reclaim control of their institutions. He pledged consequences for those responsible for the violence and halted all engagements with Iranian officials until the brutality against protestors ceases.
In response to the escalating situation, the Foreign Office in the UK summoned the Iranian ambassador, Seyed Ali Mousavi, for discussions regarding Iran’s actions. Cooper, addressing the House of Commons, condemned the killings, violence, and repression unfolding in Iran, urging the regime to be held accountable for the distressing reports.
Furthermore, Cooper announced plans for additional sanctions targeting various sectors in Iran, such as finance, energy, transport, and software. She refuted Iran’s claims of foreign interference inciting the protests as baseless propaganda, asserting that the regime’s attempts to discredit the grassroots movement were unfounded.
