McDonald’s Loyalty Program Update Sparks Customer Outrage

BusinessMcDonald's Loyalty Program Update Sparks Customer Outrage

McDonald’s customers are expressing anger following the announcement of a significant alteration to its rewards program. The fast-food giant is gearing up to raise the point requirement for redeeming free food via MyMcDonald’s Rewards.

Presently, customers need 5,500 points to claim items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting on March 17, the threshold will be increased to 6,500 points for these selections. For every £1 spent at McDonald’s, customers earn 100 points.

The current point requirement for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries is set at 1,500 points, but this will jump to 2,000 points. Additionally, the points needed for a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 points to 3,500, while a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich will now require 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.

Responding to the discontent on social media, a spokesperson for McDonald’s informed The Sun that the modifications in the loyalty program are a response to the escalating costs of food and supplies. They emphasized that while the points required for rewards are being adjusted, several new fan-favorite items are being introduced for redemption, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich, offering customers more choices.

This development coincides with the launch of McDonald’s new menu, featuring innovative offerings like the Surf N’ Turf burger, comprising two beef patties, a crispy white fish fillet patty, along with cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Another addition is the Chicken Cheeseburger, combining a beef patty, a crispy coated chicken patty, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Customers can also indulge in the new Espresso Milkshake, a thick vanilla milkshake served with a shot of espresso, and the Chilli Cheese Bites paired with tangy tomato sauce.
