Preston Manning is taking a leading role in addressing Western Canada’s historical grievances with Ottawa ahead of Alberta’s upcoming fall referendum. Manning, the former leader of the Reform Party, will co-chair virtual sessions on September 19 and 20 alongside former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell.
The forum aligns with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plan to present 10 questions to voters on October 19, including the option for the province to either remain in Canada or proceed with a second referendum on separation. Manning emphasized that the purpose of the events is to educate and engage voters in a non-partisan manner, steering away from the typical divisive debates often seen in public meetings.
Unlike previous advisory panels like the Alberta Next panel and the Fair Deal panel, Manning highlighted that this initiative aims to offer a more inclusive platform for various perspectives, rather than favoring a particular stance. The discussions will not solely focus on Alberta but will extend to a broader Western Canadian context.
Following Alberta’s referendum, the assembly plans to convene for a subsequent session in October to formulate recommendations, which will then be shared with policymakers across Western Canada. Manning stressed that concerns regarding the federal government’s role are not exclusive to Alberta, making the assembly’s outcomes relevant to other provinces as well.
The assembly intends to promote a democratic process free from partisan conflicts, with the goal of showcasing a constructive approach to decision-making that contrasts with the current divisive political landscape. Manning hopes that this initiative will demonstrate to disillusioned individuals, especially the youth, that democratic principles can be upheld and fostered.
Additionally, Manning mentioned the importance of shedding light on Smith’s other nine ballot questions, which include proposals related to immigration, constitutional negotiations on abolishing the Senate, and empowering provinces to appoint superior court judges. Smith views these proposals as a potential political compromise to address Alberta’s grievances while affirming her commitment to Canada.
Manning emphasized that a positive vote for these proposals could empower provinces to challenge federal-provincial jurisdiction boundaries, particularly in areas such as immigration.
