Firefighters in Europe faced challenges battling numerous fires on Friday amid a fresh wave of scorching heat setting records across the continent. The ongoing fires have been exacerbated by extremely dry landscapes, with the unprecedented temperatures attributed to human-induced climate change. Countries unaccustomed to such intense heat and lacking adequate air conditioning systems have been particularly hard hit.
In France, where the year has been marked as the driest on record, a new wildfire erupted in the Landes region, prompting over 500 evacuations in the town of Luglon. Concurrently, multiple fires have ravaged forests in various parts of the country, including typically cooler regions like the north and Brittany. Last month, a significant blaze near Bordeaux forced a quarter of a million residents to flee their homes.
Following the U.K.’s hottest day of the year, firefighters in the West Midlands contended with multiple fires, resulting in numerous emergency calls and evacuations. The situation was particularly dire in Stourbridge, where a massive blaze destroyed several homes, leaving many residents displaced.
In Germany, all 1,800 residents of Gey in North Rhine-Westphalia were relocated as a wildfire in the Hurtgen forest threatened their homes. The firefighting efforts were complicated by unexploded ordnance from World War II. Meanwhile, in Croatia, a fire near Omiš led to the evacuation of over 1,000 people, with numerous individuals hospitalized, some in critical condition.
Albania grappled with numerous wildfires, with one major fire in the Gurë-Lurë area being brought under control before reaching residential homes. In Greece, over 300 individuals were evacuated by sea as a wildfire encroached on seaside properties. Belgium also experienced record heat, intensifying concerns over a looming drought.
France had to shut down six nuclear reactors due to the extreme heat and drought, with one closure attributed to jellyfish clogging cooling systems. The unusual presence of jellyfish on French beaches has been linked to warmer sea temperatures, affecting water used for cooling reactors. While the shutdowns had minimal impact on electricity production, plant operators are mandated to halt operations if river temperatures rise above safety thresholds.
The extreme weather conditions pose no direct safety risks to the reactors, with measures implemented primarily to safeguard the environment.
