A man who is a husband and father of one child has been accused of killing his wife and a stranger at his residence, a year after starting a romantic relationship with the family’s live-in caregiver. Brendan Banfield, 39, faces charges of aggravated murder in connection with the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, 37, and Joseph Ryan, 38, at their home in northern Virginia, USA. The victims were fatally injured by stabbing and gunshot wounds, respectively.
Authorities allege that Banfield and the 25-year-old Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, conspired to carry out a complex double-murder scheme to frame another individual for the stabbing of his wife.
Court documents reveal that Banfield and Magalhaes, along with the wife and Ryan, were present in the primary bedroom of the Banfield residence on the morning of the killings. According to their initial statements to officials, Banfield and Magalhaes claimed to have witnessed Ryan, a stranger, attacking the wife after he entered the house. They asserted that they each shot Ryan in self-defense.
Prosecutors, however, present a contrasting narrative, asserting that Banfield and Magalhaes orchestrated Ryan’s presence at the house and staged the events to make it seem like they shot an intruder to protect themselves and the wife.
It was disclosed that Banfield and Magalhaes had been engaged in a romantic affair starting a year before the tragic incident. Both the au pair and the husband were arrested between 2023 and 2024 and initially faced murder charges. Magalhaes later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in 2024 after providing a statement confirming elements of the prosecutors’ case.
In her statement, Magalhaes admitted to creating a social media account in the wife’s name for individuals interested in unconventional sexual preferences. Ryan connected with this account, and plans were made for a sexual encounter involving a knife on the morning of February 24, 2023.
Prosecutor Eric Clingan highlighted the significance of Magalhaes’ statement in solidifying the state’s legal position.
While various theories had been proposed initially, Clingan emphasized the importance of Magalhaes’ statement in aligning the investigation towards a singular perspective.
An expert digital forensic examiner, Brendan Miller, who analyzed numerous electronic devices, suggested that Christine Banfield had interacted with Ryan through the online platform independently. Miller’s findings were reviewed by an evidence analysis team at the University of Alabama, further supporting his conclusions.
Despite Miller being reassigned from his digital forensics role in late 2024, former Fairfax County police officials stated that it was not a punitive action. Banfield’s defense attorney, John Carroll, contended that Miller’s reassignment was linked to the case and criticized the police department’s reliance on the catfishing theory.
Additionally, Banfield is facing charges of child abuse and felony child cruelty related to the case due to the presence of his daughter at the home during the tragic incident. He denies these allegations and will confront them alongside the aggravated murder accusations during the upcoming trial.
