Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has expressed his desire for Africa to regain control of its resources by breaking free from the influence of various nations such as Britain, France, Spain, and others. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, also envisions the return of Formula 1 racing to the continent before his retirement.
During a discussion before the Australian Grand Prix as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton responded to a South African journalist’s inquiry about the possibility of holding a race in Africa. He emphasized the significance of Africa and criticized the ongoing exploitation of the continent by foreign powers.
Hamilton highlighted the need for unity among African nations to reclaim their sovereignty and resources. He stressed the importance of empowering Africa to become a leading global force and voiced his eagerness to witness the continent’s resurgence.
The racing superstar advocated for Formula 1 to include Africa on its calendar, noting that no Grand Prix has been hosted on the continent since 1993. Hamilton shared his positive experiences in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, suggesting them as potential locations for future races.
As Hamilton pushes for Africa’s inclusion in Formula 1 events before his retirement, he remains actively engaged in lobbying decision-makers within the sport. With a personal connection to the continent through his ancestry in Togo, Benin, Senegal, and Nigeria, Hamilton expressed pride in his African heritage and is determined to see Africa play a prominent role in Formula 1.
