An Irish amateur rider has accused top British jockey Nico de Boinville of directing a racially abusive comment towards him at Cheltenham during the Turners Novices’ Hurdle event. Declan Queally, involved in a heated exchange with de Boinville, the stable jockey for Nicky Henderson, amid a chaotic start to the race, expressed his displeasure over the incident. The race witnessed two false starts due to the intense competition among the 21 runners, with de Boinville finishing second and Queally finishing fifth.
Following the race, Queally shared his frustration with ITV Racing, highlighting the chaotic start and expressing his disappointment over the alleged racial abuse from de Boinville. In response, de Boinville suggested Queally should reflect on his own actions. A stewards’ inquiry revealed that several riders, including Queally, had contributed to the false starts, leading to suspensions for misconduct at the start.
Queally later reported the incident to the Racing Post, alleging that de Boinville had made derogatory racial remarks towards him in front of the ITV camera. He escalated the matter by reporting it to the BHA stewards for further investigation. Despite being contacted for a response, de Boinville declined to comment. The stewards have adjourned the case to gather additional evidence for review.
