“Grieving father’s fiery words at son’s killer’s execution”

National"Grieving father's fiery words at son's killer's execution"

A grieving father shouted three words as the individual who murdered his son was put to death. Charles Victor Thompson, aged 55, was executed in the United States for the killing of his former girlfriend and her new partner. Thompson, a double murderer who had previously escaped prison, faced his fate 28 years after committing the heinous crimes. Following the fatal shootings of Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, in April 1998, Thompson spent close to three decades on death row.

In his final moments, the killer sought forgiveness from the families of his victims, expressing a desire for healing and moving on. However, Mr. Cain’s father bluntly stated, “He’s in hell.” Before his execution, a spiritual adviser offered prayers for three minutes, leading Thompson to acknowledge that there were no winners in the tragic situation.

Reflecting on his actions, the condemned man acknowledged the lasting impact of his crimes, expressing remorse and a plea to keep faith in Jesus. As the lethal injection was administered, Thompson gasped loudly and took several breaths before passing away 22 minutes later. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare remarked, “This chapter is closed, bringing long-awaited justice.”

Thompson had been in a relationship with Ms. Hayslip in the mid-1990s, but their breakup was triggered by his possessive and abusive behavior. Subsequently, Ms. Hayslip began dating Mr. Cain, leading to the fatal encounter at her apartment in Houston, Texas. After an argument in the early hours of the morning, Thompson returned and fatally shot both victims, resulting in Mr. Cain’s immediate death and Ms. Hayslip’s passing a week later.

Prosecutors from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office emphasized the prolonged wait for justice endured by the Hayslip and Cain families spanning over 25 years. Following the overturning of his initial death sentence, Thompson faced a new sentencing trial in November 2005, where a jury once again sentenced him to death by lethal injection.

After being resentenced, Thompson made a daring escape from the Harris County Jail in Houston by simply walking out the front door.
