“Greenland Protests Trump’s Annexation Plans”

International"Greenland Protests Trump's Annexation Plans"

Protests have broken out in Greenland and Denmark in opposition to Donald Trump’s repeated threats to take over the island territory, with the US President vowing to impose tariffs on nations that resist his annexation plans.

In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, large crowds of protesters filled the streets, proudly waving the territory’s red and white flag and asserting that Greenland is not for sale. Trump argues that US ownership of Greenland is crucial for national security, a claim contested by Denmark. Denmark has granted the US permission to station more troops on the island but has firmly stated that it will not “trade people” to Washington DC.

In response to challenges from Denmark and other nations, Trump announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on the UK and other countries, with the possibility of increasing it to 25% by June 1 until an agreement is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland.

Keir Starmer criticized Trump’s actions, affirming that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that its future should be determined by the Greenlanders and Danes. He emphasized the importance of Arctic security for NATO and condemned applying tariffs to allies working towards collective security. Starmer pledged to address this issue directly with the US administration.

According to a survey conducted in January 2025 by Verian, the majority of Greenlanders support either independence or remaining part of Denmark, with only six percent expressing a desire to join the US. Any attempt to forcibly take Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark, would trigger intervention by NATO allies.

Greenlanders took to the streets in Nuuk to voice their opposition and preference for independence or Danish affiliation. The sentiment against becoming part of the US was strong among the demonstrators.

The historical ties between Denmark and the US were highlighted, with the Danes considering themselves as steadfast and trustworthy allies to the United States. Greenland, a self-governing nation within Denmark since 2009, has been a point of contention following Trump’s annexation ambitions.
