Greenland Minister Denounces US Betrayal Amid Invasion Fears

PoliticsGreenland Minister Denounces US Betrayal Amid Invasion Fears

Greenland’s minister expressed the sentiment of betrayal felt by the island’s residents towards the US while advocating for a peaceful resolution. Naaja Nathanielsen, the minister responsible for business in the territory, addressed the press in Parliament, highlighting ongoing talks with allies regarding potential responses to a hypothetical invasion by Donald Trump. She emphasized the desire for increased NATO presence on the island to counter perceived threats from Russia and China.

Nathanielsen acknowledged the anxiety caused by Trump’s invasion threats and commended the solidarity shown by Britain and European allies. Stressing the pursuit of peace, she emphasized the importance of avoiding conflict and fostering friendly relations among allies.

When asked about potential NATO support in case of an invasion, the minister refrained from providing a definitive answer, underscoring the collective defense nature of the alliance. She described the adverse effects on the local population, mentioning sleepless nights and children’s fears stemming from the escalating situation.

Recent statements by the US President regarding deploying troops to Greenland for national security reasons have raised concerns. Nathanielsen speculated on Trump’s motivations, suggesting a multifaceted approach rather than a singular explanation.

Expressing deep worry over Trump’s rhetoric, the minister stated that Greenland feels let down and offended by the US’s stance, despite historic support for American values. She expressed gratitude for the support from nations like the UK, France, and Germany in solidarity with Greenland and Denmark.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to discuss Trump’s interest in acquiring the island. Greenland’s Prime Minister reiterated the island’s non-negotiable status and rejection of US ownership or rule.

Trump’s recent claims about the need to secure Greenland to prevent Russian or Chinese influence have fueled international debate and heightened tensions in the region.
