“Activists Rally Against Immigration Raids in Minneapolis”

National"Activists Rally Against Immigration Raids in Minneapolis"

In downtown Minneapolis, a protest over the weekend drew around 50,000 participants and gained global attention. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the city, dedicated demonstrators have been gathering daily since the tragic death of Renee Good.

The Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building has been at the center of the unrest stemming from Operation Metro Surge, which began in December. Named after Minnesota’s first Protestant Episcopal bishop known for his advocacy for minority communities, particularly Native Americans, the building has now become a focal point for resistance against immigration raids in the city.

Local activists brave freezing temperatures each morning at the building, equipped with signs, whistles, and a palpable determination to confront the Border Patrol agents instilling fear in their community. Their presence serves as a constant reminder to the agents that they are being observed and challenged.

Every time a white SUV approaches the Whipple building, the crowd responds with disapproval and verbal condemnation, denouncing the agents for their actions and urging them to feel ashamed. The building serves as a temporary holding facility for individuals detained during immigration enforcement operations, as well as for asylum and deportation proceedings.

Volunteers like Harris have been providing assistance to those released from the facility, offering warm clothing, food, and essentials to individuals who often leave without their belongings due to ICE procedures. The support efforts have been ongoing for the past ten days, symbolizing a collective endeavor to help those affected.

The protesters, including individuals who have traveled long distances to join the cause, are unwavering in their resistance against the current administration’s immigration policies. They aim to showcase Minnesota’s strong opposition and their determination to continue advocating for change.

Their message is clear: they are here to stay and fight for justice, as demonstrated by the words of one protester wearing a jacket labeled ‘Granny against ICE’ – “We are not going anywhere.”
