A legal representative for a former CNN anchor has criticized what he calls an unprecedented assault on freedom of speech in the United States following a contentious arrest.
The ex-CNN host, Lemon, was taken into custody by federal authorities while reporting on the Grammy awards in Los Angeles. Lemon, a seasoned journalist with three decades of experience, was arrested after he filmed a group of demonstrators disrupting a service at a church in Minnesota.
He was formally charged on Friday with conspiracy and obstructing the First Amendment rights of worshippers.
Lemon had entered Cities Church in St. Paul during immigration raids in nearby Minneapolis. Allegations surfaced that one of the church pastors was connected to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Lemon’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, condemned the arrest, stating that the Trump Justice Department’s focus on Lemon was a diversion from more significant issues, such as the killing of peaceful protesters in Minnesota. Lowell vowed to vigorously defend Lemon in court against the charges.
In a video, Lemon defended his actions, emphasizing that he was engaging in journalism by covering the protest inside the church.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi described the incident as a coordinated attack on the church and accused Lemon and other protesters of involvement. While the charges against Lemon remain unspecified, others have been accused of violating rights and disrupting religious freedom within a place of worship.
The White House took a provocative stance, sharing a photo of Lemon with a caption implying his involvement in “St. Paul Church riots,” though no specifics were provided.
CNN issued a statement expressing deep concerns about press freedom and the First Amendment following Lemon’s arrest. The network emphasized the protection of journalists under the First Amendment and pledged to monitor the case closely.
Protests erupted in Minnesota and other US cities after the deaths of US citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE officers. These incidents sparked outrage over perceived violations of Americans’ constitutional rights.
Lemon transitioned to independent work after his termination from CNN in 2023 due to controversial comments about then-Republican nominee Nikki Haley. Haley, aged 51 at the time, was the subject of Lemon’s remarks.
