Father-Son Duo Rescues Bald Eagle in Fishing Mishap

NationalFather-Son Duo Rescues Bald Eagle in Fishing Mishap

A father-son duo, Bryan Esbaugh and Wyatt, were enjoying a fishing trip on Ponhook Lake in Queens County, N.S. They unexpectedly hooked a bald eagle while fishing for smallmouth bass. Wyatt, who used to feed bass to birds, noticed the eagle following them, perhaps waiting for them to catch fish. The eagle eventually swooped down and snatched their fishing lines and lures, getting tangled and crashing into the lake.

After finding the eagle entangled in their gear, they carefully rescued it from the water. Despite the eagle’s size and sharp claws, they managed to handle it safely. With one hook in its beak and another in its foot, Wyatt and Bryan worked together to remove the hooks and release the eagle back into the wild.

Dr. Jessica Rock from the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre commended their efforts in helping the bird. She emphasized the importance of contacting wildlife authorities for assistance in such situations to ensure the best care for the animals. The fragile nature of bald eagles makes professional handling crucial for their well-being.

The eagle eventually regained its freedom, with Bryan humorously dubbing it the “Canadian White-Headed Lake Raptor,” in jest of a political renaming attempt. The heartwarming rescue story showcases the compassion and quick thinking of the father-son pair, leaving a positive impact on wildlife conservation efforts.
