Jasmin Esquivel made an unexpected journey from Saskatchewan to British Columbia earlier this summer, not knowing that her life was on the verge of a significant change. In just a few days, she was crowned Mrs. Canada Universe 2026 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, B.C.
Reflecting on her win, Esquivel shared her disbelief, especially after raising five children over the years. She expressed her realization that dreams can indeed come true one day.
Having last participated in a pageant at the age of 17, Esquivel found a renewed spark when she had the opportunity to compete at 43 years old. She described this experience as something deeply rooted in her being.
Living in Prince Albert, Sask., with her children, Esquivel credited her kids for their unwavering support and inspiration throughout her journey, despite her initial hesitations about entering the competition. Her eldest daughter, Brianna Balajonda, described their initial shock turning into admiration as they witnessed Esquivel’s dedication and training.
Esquivel emphasized the role her children played in her achievement, stating that they are the driving force behind her success. She highlighted their constant presence and encouragement during the pageant process, emphasizing their significant contribution to her journey.
The competition also emphasized community service, and Esquivel expressed gratitude for the extensive support she received from her community. Alongside her family, she engaged in volunteering activities at care homes and sports events, including organizing fun runs, as part of her preparation for the pageant.
Esquivel’s ultimate goal is to inspire women and mothers to pursue their dreams despite their parental responsibilities. She emphasized that motherhood should not hinder personal aspirations and that there is always room to chase one’s dreams.
Looking ahead, Esquivel is set to represent Canada and her hometown in Sri Lanka at Mrs. Universe 2026 in October. Her children eagerly await the opportunity to cheer her on at the global stage, expressing their unwavering support and love for their mother.
