“Farmer’s Train Dream: Eastend Scenic Tours Soar”

National"Farmer's Train Dream: Eastend Scenic Tours Soar"

Gary Southgate’s dream came to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. The journey, featuring a picturesque train ride through the valley’s stunning landscapes, marked a significant milestone for Southgate.

As a farmer from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate has spent years curating a collection of old trains, driven by his passion to share the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets.” His fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by in Biggar to North Battleford.

Starting with a 1929 steam locomotive from the Canadian Pacific Railway, Southgate gradually expanded his collection, focusing on restoring CN equipment to recreate the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains. His dedication to preserving these historical trains has saved many from being scrapped, with some earmarked for potential museum exhibits.

Despite facing challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the logistical complexities of managing the project while farming miles away, Southgate remained steadfast in his commitment. His vision extends beyond offering rail tours; he envisions creating an RV park, a museum, and a winter maintenance facility at the railyard in Eastend.

The Eastend Scenic Rail Tours have garnered widespread interest, attracting visitors from various parts of Canada and even international guests from Paris, France. Southgate’s determination to ensure the project’s success reflects his desire to preserve history and create a unique experience for Eastend, Saskatchewan, and the entire country.

With an unwavering resolve to see his vision realized, Southgate remains optimistic about the future of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. He hopes that his efforts will not only leave a lasting legacy but also inspire others to carry forward his passion for trains and history long after he is gone.
