International"Defense Expert Warns Trump: Greenland Bid Threatens NATO"

In a recent development, a defense expert criticized Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to take over Greenland, highlighting a critical flaw in his strategy. Trump, via his Truth social platform, launched a scathing attack against NATO allies, specifically targeting Keir Starmer over the Chagos Islands deal and leaking a private communication from France’s Emmanuel Macron.

Despite mounting tensions, Trump reiterated his stance on acquiring Greenland before departing for Davos, emphasizing the necessity for the US to possess the Danish territory. He justified his ambition by claiming the need to prevent potential future attempts by Russia and China to seize Greenland, citing the projected opening of sea routes due to melting ice sheets – a concept his administration has previously disavowed regarding climate change.

Professor Anthony Glees from the University of Buckingham emphasized the strategic significance of the melting Arctic region, driven by man-made global warming, which Trump denies. Glees acknowledged the potential threats posed by Russia and China in the region but cautioned that the current situation does not warrant immediate action.

Glees further warned that any US attempt to forcibly take over Greenland would lead to the swift collapse of the NATO alliance. Even if Denmark were to agree to a negotiated sale, it would still jeopardize the alliance’s integrity, according to him. The professor emphasized the vital role NATO played during the Cold War in countering communism and stressed the detrimental impact Trump’s actions could have on the alliance.

Amidst the escalating crisis over Greenland, the defense expert emphasized Britain’s need to maintain its strength and independence, particularly regarding the Trident nuclear deterrent. He clarified that while the UK relies on the US for certain aspects of its defense, it retains control over the Trident missiles and can use them independently if necessary.

The expert urged against downplaying Britain’s capabilities and stressed the importance of self-reliance in defense matters. He highlighted the need for the nation to assert its strength and not rely excessively on external support, emphasizing its capacity to stand independently.
