“Canadian Government to Shift Research Farm Activities”

Tech"Canadian Government to Shift Research Farm Activities"

The Canadian federal government has announced plans to gradually cease activities at its research farm located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. The seed increase unit currently based at the Indian Head facility will be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028. This move is part of a strategic transition process, with the unit expected to operate from both locations in 2027 to facilitate the shift.

Responsible for propagating and distributing breeder seeds to pedigreed growers for multiplication and eventual sale as certified seed, the unit plays a crucial role in the agricultural sector. The decision to transfer operations comes following a recent agreement between federal and provincial authorities to preserve the Indian Head and Scott research farms, which were initially slated for closure along with five other research facilities nationwide.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, the provincial government will assume ownership of the land as the federal government phases out its activities. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has affirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting the Canadian seed industry, including meeting breeder seed demands and upholding pedigreed seed quality standards.

However, the future plans for the Indian Head and Scott research farms remain uncertain in the absence of the seed increase unit. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit stated that negotiations are underway with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to determine the fate of the remaining land at the Indian Head and Scott sites as federal operations wind down. Additionally, the provincial government is collaborating with the Saskatchewan agricultural sector to formulate a comprehensive strategy for the utilization of the research farmland.
