The Calgary Flames community mourns the passing of Peter Maher, the iconic voice behind the team’s radio broadcasts for over three decades. Maher, who was 79 years old, served as the play-by-play commentator for 33 consecutive Flames seasons, starting in 1980. His memorable catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became synonymous with Flames hockey, especially during the team’s 1989 Stanley Cup victory and the 2004 finals run.
Retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season, Maher’s contributions were celebrated by the Flames, who acknowledged his profound impact on fans as a vital part of the Flames experience. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher transitioned to calling Flames games after previously covering Toronto Maple Leafs matches for the CKO Radio Network.
Rob Kerr, Maher’s colleague in the Saddledome press box, expressed deep sorrow over Maher’s passing, highlighting Maher’s dedication to storytelling and authenticity in his broadcasting. Kerr recalled Maher’s meticulous approach to his craft, exemplified by his passionate calls during pivotal moments in Flames history, such as the 2004 playoff series. Maher’s broadcasting legacy extended beyond the Flames, encompassing NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the historic 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Recognized for his outstanding broadcasting contributions, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. Following his retirement, Maher’s lasting impact was honored by naming the Scotiabank Saddledome’s broadcast booth after him. Additionally, an annual award in Calgary now bears Maher’s name, recognizing Flames players who embody sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
