“Buck Martinez Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

Sports"Buck Martinez Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence"

The Toronto Blue Jays will be honoring longtime broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after a distinguished career of over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the Blue Jays, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez acknowledged the fans for warmly welcoming him into their homes and considering him a part of their families. Renowned for his distinctive broadcasting style and trademark American accent, Martinez popularized phrases such as “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” which he attributes to his return to Toronto in 2010 and his experiences in Milwaukee.

Reflecting on his transition to retirement, Martinez shared that it marked a significant change after being actively involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite his initial plans to participate in the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health concerns, including battling cancer for the second time in 2025 (first diagnosed in 2022), necessitated his decision to step away. However, Martinez happily confirmed being cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who shaped the Blue Jays franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence, such as Jose Bautista, George Bell, and Roy Halladay, will also be recognized.

Martinez, who initially felt apprehensive upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, described his transformation from feeling “exiled” to embracing Toronto as a special place for baseball. Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, he lauded the thrilling Game 7 and the team’s camaraderie.

In reflecting on current Jays’ struggles, particularly with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Martinez emphasized the challenges even the best players face in the game. Despite the difficulties, Martinez remains appreciative of the memories and experiences he shared with the Blue Jays and their loyal fans.
