“Comedian Earnings Plunge as SiriusXM Discontinues Raw Comedy Channel”

Art"Comedian Earnings Plunge as SiriusXM Discontinues Raw Comedy Channel"

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant reduction in her earnings, a situation shared by many others in the industry. SiriusXM made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, known for showcasing over 800 comedians, and introduced a new channel under the ownership of renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has deprived Miele and numerous working-class comedians of a vital source of income and visibility, as the spotlight now shines on wealthy celebrity comics. Miele expressed how SiriusXM’s platform had been crucial for her financial stability, enabling many comedians to sustain themselves during challenging times.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM about creating opportunities for comedians at various career stages, data from the advocacy group Stand Up for Standup paints a different picture. The rebranded channel featured only 275 comedians last month, with the top 50 artists, including well-known names like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, receiving more than 75% of the airplay.

Miele, once a top performer on the channel, highlighted the shift towards a wealth concentration among a select few comedians, leaving others struggling. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM poses a threat to the future of emerging comedians, limiting their chances of breakthroughs similar to Maniscalco’s.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar revealed a significant drop in his royalties since the channel’s overhaul, affecting his income and that of his peers. Many Canadian comics relying on SiriusXM royalties to sustain their careers in the U.S. now face uncertainties and potential challenges, with some potentially needing to return to Canada.

Calls from prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf urging Maniscalco to support emerging talents have surfaced. Maniscalco, in response to the backlash, stated that the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement, emphasizing his commitment to fostering diverse voices in comedy on his channel.

The comedy community, both in the U.S. and Canada, faces a moment of reckoning, with solidarity and advocacy becoming crucial to address the industry’s challenges. The impact of these changes on comedians’ livelihoods is profound, signaling a need for collective action and support within the industry.
