“Britons Urged to Prepare Emergency Packs as Met Office Issues Weather Alerts”

Updates"Britons Urged to Prepare Emergency Packs as Met Office Issues Weather Alerts"

Britons residing in 15 areas are being advised to assemble an “emergency” pack as the Met Office has issued additional weather alerts. Snow and ice warnings persist in numerous parts of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, and rain alerts have now been added.

The initial yellow rain warning encompasses Northern Ireland, set to take effect at 9 pm today until the same time tomorrow. Residents in various counties are cautioned about potential flooding and power disruptions due to expected rainfall amounts.

Anticipated rainfall is around 30mm widely and up to 60mm in elevated areas, with concerns over potential flooding exacerbated by melting snow, according to the Met Office.

Another rain warning is in place for southern Scotland, affecting specific regions from early tomorrow morning until midnight, with up to 90mm of rainfall projected, raising the risk of isolated communities being isolated by floods.

In northern Scotland, a third yellow rain alert covers multiple areas, with rainfall estimates reaching 60mm generally and up to 110mm in certain locations, posing an additional flood risk due to snowmelt.

All warnings stress the importance of having a “flood plan” and “emergency flood kit” ready. Advice includes checking road conditions before travel, preparing for power outages, and ensuring essential items like torches, batteries, and mobile phone chargers are readily available.

David Morgan, SEPA Flood Duty Manager, highlighted the increased flood risk as snow begins to thaw following recent cold spells, potentially leading to flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and properties.
