Catherine O’Hara, the renowned actress, has passed away at the age of 71 in her Los Angeles home after a short illness, as confirmed by her agency, CAA. Born on March 4, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, O’Hara, of Irish descent and raised Catholic, was the sixth of seven siblings. Her younger sister, Mary Margaret O’Hara, also pursued a successful career in the arts.

Survived by her husband, Bo Welch, a production designer, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke, O’Hara rose to fame as a member of Toronto’s esteemed Second City improv comedy troupe, where she worked alongside notable figures like Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, and Eugene Levy. Her contributions to the troupe’s hit show, SCTV, earned her an Emmy Award for writing, solidifying her position in the comedy world.

Throughout her career, O’Hara graced screens in various films and TV series, most notably as Kate McCallister in the beloved Home Alone franchise. She also showcased her talent in movies such as Beetlejuice and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours. Recognized for her collaborations with filmmaker Christopher Guest, O’Hara appeared in several acclaimed comedies, including Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show.

In recent years, O’Hara captivated audiences with her Emmy-winning portrayal of Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, where she demonstrated a perfect blend of humor and heart. Beyond her professional achievements, O’Hara was admired for her kindness and the joy she brought to her roles, leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
