Anthony Joshua’s uncle has stated that the former world champion has shared his intention to retire after a tragic car accident took the lives of two close friends. The incident occurred in Nigeria when the Lexus SUV Joshua was a passenger in collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos. The crash claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, whose funerals were held at a mosque in London.
Following the accident, Joshua was seen on Instagram sitting with family members, including his mother and others, paying tribute to his late friends. Reports suggest that Joshua has contemplated retirement from boxing, a decision he reportedly shared with his family privately. His uncle emphasized the relief felt by the family, stating that witnessing Joshua fight in the ring always caused emotional distress.
Although reports from Nigeria indicated Joshua’s retirement, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not yet made a final decision on his future in boxing. The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged in connection with the crash, facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving among others.
Joshua, who recently returned to the UK after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident, is said to be mentally impacted by the tragic loss of his friends. The boxing community is uncertain about Joshua’s return to the ring, with promoter Frank Warren acknowledging the emotional toll the accident has taken on Joshua.
