InternationalFather from Aberdeenshire Survives Sepsis, Amputation

A father from Turriff, Aberdeenshire, faced a life-threatening situation when what seemed like a common cold turned out to be sepsis, leading to the amputation of both his legs. Mathew Hicks initially treated his symptoms with paracetamol but was rushed to the hospital after his condition worsened. Doctors discovered he was battling sepsis, Strep A, and pneumonia.

Placed in a medically induced coma, Mathew woke up to the devastating news that his feet had lost circulation, necessitating amputation below the knee. Despite the shock, he accepted the situation and underwent the necessary amputations.

His family, especially his daughter Evie, endured a difficult period as Mathew fought for his life in the ICU. The use of an ECMO machine was crucial in stabilizing his condition. Although he faced setbacks like the amputations and a heart condition post-sepsis, Mathew’s positive attitude and love for his family kept him strong.

After spending 12 weeks in the hospital, Mathew finally returned home. He expressed gratitude for being back with his family and shared his newfound perspective on life, emphasizing the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones. Despite the uncertainties ahead, the family remains hopeful for the future as they navigate this challenging journey together.
