“The Family Chat” campaign promotes online safety dialogue

Sports"The Family Chat" campaign promotes online safety dialogue

As their 11-year-old son prepared to start secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone. Before taking this step, the couple made sure to have open discussions with each other and their son.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with children having access to smartphones. She emphasized the importance of managing and ensuring the safety of children’s online activities, citing alarming statistics about exposure to inappropriate content and mental health issues. Giovanna stressed the need for parents to engage in conversations with their children to empower them in navigating the digital world.

With the holiday season seeing many children receiving smartphones as gifts, families are now faced with the challenge of balancing the advantages and drawbacks of this technology. Over the upcoming year, a campaign called “The Family Chat,” in partnership with Tesco Mobile, aims to encourage families to discuss online device usage, regardless of their children’s ages.

Giovanna highlighted the value of participating in the campaign, noting that it provides valuable insights that benefit her family. She praised Tesco Mobile’s resources and online hub for simplifying the process of addressing online safety concerns.

The Fletchers, including Giovanna and Tom, who is a member of the band McFly and a children’s author, have two other sons aged seven and nine. These children use tablets to communicate with family members and play online games. Giovanna emphasized the importance of communication and connectivity, especially when she and Tom are away for work.

When their eldest son transitioned to high school, the Fletchers equipped him with an old smartphone with restricted functionalities. They maintained an open dialogue with him about the device’s limitations and the reasons behind them, emphasizing the importance of understanding and cooperation.

Giovanna acknowledged the significance of limiting screen time not only for children but also for adults. She highlighted their family’s rules, such as no phones in the bedroom or at the dinner table, to promote healthy device usage habits.

To ensure children’s safety online, she recommended implementing gradual steps when introducing internet-enabled devices to children. Setting up child accounts, inputting accurate ages, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online safety were identified as crucial measures.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from potential online risks. She advised parents to be vigilant and engage in ongoing discussions with their children about their online experiences and smartphone usage.
