Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn suffered a crash during the women’s downhill alpine skiing final at the Winter Olympics on Sunday. Vonn, 41, had returned to action just nine days after a left ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Her comeback was marred by a dramatic crash early in her run, leading to immediate medical attention and her evacuation on a stretcher. The distressing incident left spectators in shock as Vonn was airlifted, presumably to a nearby hospital.
Commentating on BBC Two, five-time Olympic skier Graham Bell expressed disbelief at the unfortunate turn of events, highlighting Vonn’s determination and the risks she took to compete.
Former British downhill skier Chemmy Alcott, who competed alongside Vonn, emotionally shared her thoughts on the incident, expressing sadness over the unexpected outcome and the challenges Vonn faced due to her previous injury.
Despite a previous ACL injury in January, Vonn had made a remarkable recovery to participate in the Winter Olympics. However, her final race ended in disappointment as she crashed out, leading to a temporary course hold and another athlete, Cande Moreno, also suffering a crash.
