An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the community as the owner attributes the closure to the challenging location hindering foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after a successful two and a half-year run catering to what owner Sonya Resemblance fondly referred to as “beautiful people.”
This shutdown occurs amidst a broader crisis affecting the pub and hospitality industry in Britain, with numerous establishments closing each year due to escalating costs and evolving consumer behaviors causing strain within the sector.
For instance, the renowned White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently, signaling the ongoing struggles faced by pub owners. Industry experts had previously warned about the potential decline of the pub sector due to soaring operational costs, leading to a wave of closures in early 2025.
Despite being recognized as one of the country’s top 50 cafés at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before its closure, The Dove Inn faced challenges. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the establishment in July 2023, offered a gluten-free menu that garnered praise for catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
Expressing gratitude to patrons, Sonya acknowledged the business’s efforts in creating job opportunities, providing training, and organizing events aimed at enhancing mental well-being. However, she lamented the inability to sustain operations at the current location, attributing the closure primarily to the unfavorable setting.
The decision to close follows a prior acknowledgment by the business of the difficulties posed by the prevailing retail and hospitality landscape. Despite efforts from loyal customers to support the business in its final days, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16, eliciting an outpouring of supportive messages.
One customer expressed regret over the closure, reflecting on the cherished memories created at The Dove Inn and expressing hope for a potential revival in the future.
