“Ukraine and Russia Agree to Ceasefire for Nuclear Plant Repairs”

International"Ukraine and Russia Agree to Ceasefire for Nuclear Plant Repairs"

Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement on a temporary ceasefire to facilitate urgent repairs on a damaged power line at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the largest nuclear facility in Europe, as confirmed by officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today.

The IAEA, a UN body responsible for overseeing nuclear facilities and ensuring safety standards, is coordinating efforts to prevent accidents and promote peaceful nuclear energy use.

Following military activity that led to the disconnection of the 330 kV backup line on January 2, leaving the plant reliant on a single 750 kV main power line, technicians from Ukraine’s electrical grid operator are set to commence repairs during the temporary truce in the coming days.

A team from the IAEA has been dispatched from Vienna to monitor the repair work on the frontline, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the critical role of the agency in negotiating such temporary ceasefires, highlighting the importance of nuclear safety at ZNPP amid ongoing conflict.

Winter protection measures, including temperature controls to prevent freezing in groundwater wells supplying cooling systems, and operational emergency diesel generators at the plant, are in place to mitigate risks.

Recent military actions damaging a substation at the Chernobyl plant and causing temporary power reductions at other sites underscore the vulnerabilities of Ukraine’s nuclear infrastructure.

Grossi warned of the direct impact of attacks on power infrastructure on nuclear safety and announced plans for an IAEA assessment mission on critical substations supplying electricity to reactor cooling systems.

IAEA teams have reported instances of air raid alarms and military activity near all five nuclear sites in Ukraine over the past week, including close proximity to Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnitsky, South Ukraine, and Chernobyl plants.

The temporary ceasefire enables the crucial repairs on the ZNPP backup line, enhancing the safety of Europe’s largest nuclear facility and reducing the risk of a potential nuclear incident.
