Michael Schumacher Progresses to Sitting Up After Skiing Accident

SportsMichael Schumacher Progresses to Sitting Up After Skiing Accident

Michael Schumacher is said to have regained the ability to sit up and is no longer confined to a bed following years of rehabilitation. The former F1 champion has been out of the public eye since a skiing accident in 2013 resulted in a serious head injury.

Since the incident in the French Alps where he hit his head on a rock, Schumacher has been under the care of his wife, Corinna, and a team of healthcare professionals. After being in a medically induced coma for months, he returned home to Lake Geneva.

Now at 57 years old, Schumacher splits his time between his properties in Switzerland and Majorca. Recent reports suggest a positive development in his health, with sources indicating that he can now sit up and be transported within his estates, although he still cannot walk.

There are no indications that Schumacher is experiencing Locked-in Syndrome, a condition where individuals are aware of their surroundings but can only communicate through blinking. A source close to the family mentioned that while Schumacher may understand some aspects of his environment, his ability to communicate is limited.

The family primarily resides in their lavish home in Gland, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva. Additionally, they own a mansion in Las Brisas, Majorca, purchased from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in 2017.

Since the accident over 12 years ago, only a select few, including family, close friends, and staff, have been permitted to visit Schumacher. The importance of maintaining privacy was underscored in 2025 when three individuals were convicted of attempting to extort €15 million (£12m) from the family by threatening to release personal photos, videos, and medical records stolen by a former security guard.

Contrary to previous reports, Schumacher did not attend his daughter’s wedding at their Majorca residence in 2024, as his privacy was respected. With seven F1 World Championships under his belt, Schumacher remains tied with Lewis Hamilton as one of the most successful drivers in the sport’s history. Notably, Ross Brawn, Ferrari’s former technical director, is among the few individuals who have visited Schumacher post-accident.
