Vodafone is introducing a novel method for web access. Instead of relying on traditional copper or fiber cables, the company’s latest Wi-Fi router operates by downloading files and streaming movies through a 5G mobile signal.
This innovation caters to households currently lacking access to faster full fiber connections or individuals seeking more flexibility. The device’s mobility feature makes it ideal for renters or students frequently changing residences.
One key advantage is the straightforward installation process. As it operates on Vodafone’s network, there’s no requirement for a technician to visit or perform any wall drilling. Users can simply plug the device into a power source, switch it on, and immediately connect to the internet.
It’s important to note that this new system offers speeds up to 150Mbps, which is sufficient for activities like streaming Netflix, sending emails, and working from home. However, it falls short of full fiber speeds that can exceed 900Mbps.
For reference, downloading a full HD movie using this 5G router would take approximately 8 minutes, compared to just 40 seconds with a fiber gigabit connection.
To assist consumers in choosing the best option, Vodafone is launching an integrated availability checker on Vodafone.co.uk. This tool aims to simplify the decision-making process by showing whether full fiber or 5G Broadband offers the fastest speeds in a specific area.
This isn’t Vodafone’s initial venture into 5G internet provision. The company previously offered the GigaCube device, which has now been replaced by this new router.
Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “Millions of households are still paying over the odds for unreliable and slow broadband that often only reaches 74Mbps. With Vodafone 5G Broadband, we’re giving those homes a genuinely fast alternative, at great value, with no installation, no waiting, and no hassle.”
Furthermore, Vodafone’s plans start at £21 per month, while Three, now part of Vodafone, offers a similar service priced at £11 for the first nine months.
