Research conducted by Hybrid Cloud Services revealed that a significant number of people resort to using a single password for all their accounts, a risky practice that compromises online security. Furthermore, a large percentage of individuals use only a handful of passwords for all their online activities, making it simpler for cybercriminals to breach their accounts.
According to cybersecurity experts, using a unique password for each account is one of the best practices for enhancing online security. Despite repeated warnings, common and weak passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” continue to be widely used in the UK, leaving users susceptible to cyber attacks.
To bolster online security, experts recommend implementing two-factor authentication whenever possible to add an extra layer of protection. Additionally, creating complex, lengthy passwords and utilizing a password manager are crucial steps to securely managing login credentials and preventing password reuse.
Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasized the importance of avoiding predictable or personal information in passwords and regularly updating them. Cooke also advised businesses to refresh their passwords every three months for heightened security.
Enhancing password security can be achieved through simple strategies:
1. Utilize passphrases: Formulate long passphrases by combining unrelated words, such as “purple-umbrella-dragon-forest,” to create robust yet memorable passwords.
2. Generate unique passwords: Employ password managers or tools to devise strong, random passwords for individual accounts, ensuring unique logins for enhanced security.
3. Use a password manager: Securely store and manage credentials with password managers, facilitating the maintenance of strong, distinct passwords across various accounts.
